English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) education is provided in high schools to support the English language development of students whose first language is not English. For more information see the NSW Department of Education's EAL/D literacy and numeracy page.
Students eligible for EAL/D support range from those newly arrived in Australia and beginning to learn English, to those Australian-born students with a Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE), who require further development of their English language skills.
Our EAL/D program consists of one full-time teacher and includes the following key elements:
- Identifying at an early stage, students who are experiencing difficulties with literacy and giving them appropriate support.
- Teaching literacy skills in an explicit and systematic way.
- Providing continuity in the development of each student's literacy skills through a planned, whole-school approach.
