Students explore the ways in which aspects and concerns of texts from the past have been carried forward, borrowed from and/or appropriated into more recent culture. The module develops students’ understanding of how and why cultural values are maintained and changed. This is a course for students with a love of literature.
You should choose English-extension if you have an interest in language, reading, literature and media. Students who have an aptitude or passion for English should consider English extension as a way of building upon and extending skills from the English-advanced course. If you enjoy looking at the power of language and context, or enjoy critically reflecting on texts, then English-extension is for you.
Learning English-extension
English-extension is a Stage 6, 2 unit board developed course. Students must also study English-advanced.
English-extension provides students with the opportunity to further strengthen their understanding of how and why aspects and concerns of texts from the past have been carried forward, borrowed from and/or appropriated into more recent cultures. In extension 1, students extend their understanding of the ways that texts contribute to their awareness of the diversity of ideas, attitudes and perspectives evident in texts.
Across Stage 6 the selection of texts should give students experience of the following as appropriate:
- texts which are widely regarded as quality literature, including a range of literary texts written about intercultural experiences and the peoples and cultures of Asia
- a range of Australian texts, including texts by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander authors and those that give insights into diverse experiences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples
- a range of types of texts drawn from prose fiction, drama, poetry, nonfiction, film, media, multimedia and digital texts.
In extension 2 students undertake independent investigation to develop a sustained composition and document this process in their major work journal and reflection Statement.
English-extension will provide you with skills in analysis, critical thinking and academic writing which will assist you in pursuing tertiary study. Some examples of careers include those in education, research, politics, law, medicine, social work, librarianship and museum curation.
