Dance is designed for students who have an interest in dance or who would like to learn how to dance. It is aimed for students who wish to enhance their performance ability and learn new styles.
Students who have a genuine interest in dance and wish to continue to develop their understanding, technique and performance quality can study dance in more detail through the 200-hour course.
This course provides students with the opportunity to undertake a study of dance as an art form.
Learning dance
Students undertake an in-depth study of dance in a major study of one of the three components.
The published course prescriptions, which may change in total or in part every three years, indicate works and artists to be studied in the HSC Course in core appreciation and major study appreciation.
Stage 5
Stage 6
There is a lot of physical and practical work in this course but students must be aware that a solid theoretical background is necessary for success in the HSC
Students learn the skills of dance technique to perform and create dances, to critically analyse, respond, enjoy and make discerning judgement about dance. As well, students will learn to manage their own learning and to work together with others in a range of capacities: as performers, composers, as students in a cooperative learning environment, through problem solving tasks and appreciating dance works. It is suggested that students have studied dance prior to commencing this course
Students undertake a study of dance as an art-form. While the course builds on the Stages 4 and 5 dance course, it also caters for students with less experience in dance.
Students study three interrelated components; performance, composition and appreciation and develop their understanding of dance practice in relation to a wider appreciation of dance artists and their work.
Performing in dance
The performance aspect should be supported by willingness to practice and show an interest in the study of dance. It is advised that the students have background knowledge or have studied classical ballet or contemporary dance prior to studying this course. Choosing classical ballet as a subject will also assist students in developing their technique.
Appreciation of dance involves the study of various choreographers, their styles and their influence on the development of dance.
