Photographic and digital media
Photography elective is studied for 100 hours Years 9 and 10 and 200 hours in Years 11 and 12. Photography is an elective course for students wishing to explore traditional darkroom, digital and video photography methods in depth, from both a practical and theoretical perspective. Students will develop practical skills and an understanding of the critical and historical aspects of photography.
The topics covered in this course are photo grams, portraiture, still life, advertising, photojournalism, urban landscapes and beach landscapes. The weighting for the course is 70 per cent practical and 30 per cent theory.
An excursion is planned during the second semester for students to photograph the city or the beach. Here students will have the opportunity to hone their skills and develop their body of work in preparation for the annual exhibition.
Our photographic media
During the photographic and digital media course students are expected to produce photographic works and detail the development of these works in their photographic process diary (PPD). A photographic process diary (PPD) is also used to record ideas and document procedures.
Students will also undertake both critical and historical studies of relevant photographers associated with each unit of work. Students will be given a computer research assignment and must also sit an examination at the end of each semester.
It provides opportunities for students to build upon their knowledge and understanding of components of the visual arts mandatory course including the frames, artist practice and the conceptual framework using wet and digital photography.
Students learn to interpret and explain the function of and relationships in the art-world between the artist – artwork – world – audience to make and study photographic and digital media artworks.
In Years 9 and 10, photographic and digital media an excursion is planned during the year to specific art and photography exhibitions related to the unit of work being studied. This may include Art Express, World Press Photo, Biennale of Sydney or Sculpture by the sea. Photographic and digital media elective can be studied for 100 or 200 hours in Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10).
Students learn to use a variety of cameras including pinhole cameras, box brownies, 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) film cameras, as well as digital SLR cameras. They learn procedures and techniques in darkroom processing and digital manipulation using programs such as Adobe photoshop.

The Photography, Video and Digital Imaging course in Stage 6 builds the skills of the students through practical tasks and critical thinking opportunities. The practical tasks include location expeditions, experiences in the dark room, staged sets using props and use of technology for digital manipulation.
