Our textiles club introduces students to true project-based learning with a high degree of independent decision making.
Students have made choices around the focus areas that they would like to concentrate on – many choosing to explore the versatility of yarns with crocheting and knitting. Both textile techniques lend themselves to traditional knitting and quilt making circles – as students in year 10 are making important decisions about their futures it has helped to maintain focus and share together exploration of the future. Several students are exploring apparel – with some making toiles (prototypes) and so learning how to read, understand and apply patterns to produce their textile item.
From this - with critical evaluation – design changes can be made so that it suits the person wearing the clothing. A small number of students are either deconstructing preloved clothing and creating something new or creating high fashion evening wear with a contemporary theme.
We also have two groups who are designing and making large banners for Remembrance Day in November. This continues the work of last year so that the textile installation will cover more walkways and buildings within the school. Our textiles class is full of diverse interests and skills – it is always busy, hectic but incredibly exciting and stimulating.
