Today more than 130 countries have adopted The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and more than 8 million young people have participated worldwide. Locally over 775,000 young people have participated the Award in Australia since it began in 1959.
The program gives a structure for young Australians aged 14 – 24 to realise their ambitions and to change their world. They will move beyond their comfort zones and gain a sense of real achievement and self-confidence.
The adventurous journey is all about getting out and going on an expedition or exploration in an unfamiliar and challenging environment with an agreed team goal. More than any other section of the duke of ed framework, the adventurous journey is about teamwork and social connection with both the team members who will undertake the journey and the volunteers who instruct, supervise, and assess the journey. The journey creates the environment for group work through planning, task sharing, problem solving, role allocation, and team reflection.
At the heart of the adventurous journey is the opportunity for a young person to engage in activities that require determination, physical effort, perseverance, problem solving, and cooperation. It is intended that all who undertake this section of the Duke of Ed are rewarded with a unique, challenging, and memorable experience. Although the adventurous journey is most frequently undertaken in the outdoors in the form of a bushwalk, it may be undertaken with many different types of personal physical effort, in a national park, in an urban setting, or even in a virtual or partly virtual mode.
The distance you walk per day on DofE varies between awards. A standard distance to walk is 16km per day on Bronze, 19km per day on Silver, and 23km per day on Gold. Naturally, some groups will do less than this, and others more.
As Quakers Hill High School is an award centre for duke of Ed we will continue to support and work with our silver students who continue to complete their other activities.
