Transition to high school
Starting high school is an exciting milestone for students and their families. At Quakers Hill High School, we make sure every new student feels safe, confident and supported as they settle in, make friends and build a strong foundation for success.
Moving from primary to high school is a big change. It’s normal to feel a little nervous at first, but it’s also an exciting time filled with new opportunities, subjects and experiences.
Visit the NSW Department of Education to learn more about starting high school.
Starting high school is one of the most important milestones in your life. We strive to work together to make sure our students have a strong start and feel known, valued and cared for.
Here are some important things to think about as you prepare for a successful start to Year 7:
- Attendance: Coming to school every day is vital. If you miss too much school, you will miss out on big parts of your learning. We want to prepare you for life after school, and just like in the workplace, you are expected to be here every day and on time. Please make sure your parents communicate the reason for any absences promptly and try to avoid missing valuable learning time.
- Bring your equipment: When you come to school, make sure you bring your laptop, diary, books, pens, pencils, PE gear and other essentials. Check your timetable each night and pack your bag ready for the next day. This is your responsibility – not your parents’. Over the next six years, your job is to get a quality education, and you can only do that if you come prepared every day.
- Ask questions: There are many people at Quakers Hill High School who can help you. If something is worrying you or you are unsure about something, please ask. Talk to other students, your Year Adviser, a Deputy Principal, your teachers, a Head Teacher, or our school counsellors.
- Follow instructions: A big part of being successful in life is learning to follow rules and instructions. People who can’t do this often struggle to reach their potential. We have rules at Quakers Hill High School to keep everyone safe and to create the best possible learning environment. We have high expectations for all students when it comes to behaviour and cooperation. These expectations are summarised in our SMART Code, which you’ll learn about as you start Year 7.
- Wear your uniform: You are part of our school community, and it is important to show that with pride. Wearing your school uniform every day helps create a safe and respectful environment. It also prepares you for the world of work, where most jobs require a certain dress standard.
- Understand and commit to our SMART code: This outlines the expectations for behaviour at Quakers Hill High School.
- S – Stay Safe
- M – Be Motivated to learn and take part in school activities
- A – Focus on Academics – our primary goal is learning
- R – Show Respect – be kind and polite to others
- T – Practise Tolerance – listen to others and value different opinions
If you do your best in all these areas, you’will gain a quality education, make meaningful memories, and enjoy a strong start to the next chapter of your life.
Welcome to Quakers Hill High School and all the best for a strong start to Year 7.
