Science competitions are open to all our students. Some require attendance at a presentation day while others are done during school time. The following outlines the competitions in which QHHS students compete each year.
Tournament of Minds
Teams of students undertake to solve a challenge that is set from one of the following categories:
- Applied Technology
- Language Literature
- Maths Engineering
- Social Sciences
Teams compete against those from other schools
Participation requires students attend workshops that are held after school and during lunchtimes. Students will also attend the Regional tournament day where they will present their work. If successful in the Regional Competition, teams can go on to compete at state and national levels.

International Science Competition
This competition is run through the University of New South Wales and Education Assessment Australia. It takes the form of a test that is done at school during the normal school day. Students compete as individuals at the appropriate level based on their Year at school.
Fee is $7.70
Young Scientist Competition
This competition is run by the Science Teachers' Association of NSW.
Students' projects are submitted to the Young Scientists competition by the school based on merit. In judging the best projects, judges consider the originality of the topic, the innovative nature of the aim, the quality of the research and experimental work and the quality of the written scientific report that the student submits to explain their work.
There are cash prizes for the best entries in each of the age sections and categories at state level. A student nominated for the award of Young Scientist of the Year comes from amongst the category winners.

Creativity in Science and Technology
The Science teachers at QHHS encourage all of our Science students to participate in individual projects that they will conduct at home in their own time which may be entered in the Creativity in Science and Technology (CREST) program. This program is run through the CSIRO to engage students in open-ended Science investigation and technological projects. Students may develop new technological devices or materials, or experiment with support from their teachers and the CREST project staff.
To enter in the Bronze medal category, students need to spend 10 hours on their work. More dedicated students may wish to enter the Silver or Gold medal categories, but fees apply and more advanced and involved work is required for entry into these competitions
