Assessment and reporting
Assessment and reporting are key parts of student learning at Quakers Hill High School.
Our teachers use a range of strategies to understand what students know, how they are progressing, and where they can improve.
Assessment helps teachers provide meaningful feedback, celebrate achievements and plan for future learning. We also make sure parents and carers are informed about their child’s progress through clear and regular reporting.
Assessment
At our school, students are supported to understand what is expected of them in each subject and how their work will be assessed.
They complete a variety of assessment tasks throughout the year (from in-class activities to formal exams) that help teachers track learning and achievement.
Our students also take part in statewide assessments, including:
- National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN): Assesses reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy for students in Years 7 and 9. Tests are held in May each year by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), with results released in August.
- Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development (VALID): An online diagnostic science assessment for students in Year 8 (and sometimes Year 10). It helps teachers understand student understanding in science and scientific inquiry.
- Record of School Achievement (RoSA): Awarded to eligible students who leave school before completing their Higher School Certificate. The RoSA records grades earned from Year 10 onwards.
- Higher School Certificate (HSC): An internationally recognised qualification awarded to students who successfully complete Years 11 and 12 in NSW.
Assessment documents
Our assessment handbooks explain how assessment works across each year group and what students can expect in their subjects.
The assessment calendars show when key tasks are due across the year. They help students plan ahead and manage their time effectively.
For detailed information, check each subject’s assessment notification, which will be issued by the class teacher.
If a student is unwell, away, or unable to complete an assessment on time, the following forms can be used to request an extension or appeal a decision.
Our teachers and head teachers are here to help guide you through the process.
Reporting
Our teachers continually observe student learning and assess their progress throughout the year.
Formal reports are sent home twice a year and provide a clear summary of your child’s achievement, effort and growth.
- In Years 7 to 10, reports use the common grade scale to show achievement against course outcomes.
- In Years 11 and 12, teachers use NESA's achievement standards to determine A to E grades.
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are assessed based on competency achievement.
Reports also include comments that highlight strengths and suggest next steps for improvement.
